Those who close to me know that I am a huge fan of movies with twisted plot and M. Night Shyamalan (MNS) is one of the director who know how to do this sort of movies very well. In fact, the movie 'The Village' directed by him is one of my all time favourite movie apart from the 'Sixth Sense'. After watching the trailer a while ago, I have to say that this is one of my most anticipated movie in 2015.. Knowing M. Night Shyamalan works, my expectation was sky high... However, based on his recent movies such as 'After Earth', I somehow feel that he might ran out of ideas and probably lost his magic touch. I was expecting this movie to elevate his crerativity as what he did in his early 2000's movies. So was my expectation met?
The Visit tells a story a haunting story about a brother and sister discovering something deeply disturbing during a visit to their grandparent's. I am not going to spoil the thrill for those who have not watched it because that is the satisfaction when you watch a movie with this kind of twisted plot, i.e. you are waiting what is going to happen next, to unreveal the mystery and ready to be surprised.
The movie was build up nicely. It keep the audience guessing what is the mystery all about. Especially the scene when the grandkids discover the stange habits of their grandparents. However, the most disappointing part to me is the way MNS chose to reveal the mystery and change the plot, i.e. revealing who the grandparents really are. I was expecting that he will find a much more shocking plot twist than what he did in the movie. To be honest, the twist is not as shocking and unexpected (as what you normally wish when you watch this sort of movie - you wish all your guesses were wrong) as I hope it would be. This really underwhelm me and an anti climax to the good build up of the movie. In addition, there were some plot or scenes which were left hanging and therefore unnecessary such as the parts where people are coming over to seek help from the grandparents which to me could be used to show the connection between the grandparents and the 'real grandparents' (you got to watvh the movie to understand what I mean here). The ending was again disastrous. It seems like a sloppy and simplistic way to end such movie. This really make me question is MNS really ran out of ideas? Overall, I would give this movie 3/5 stars.
